Ceres, which is classified as a dwarf planet and it is the most massive body in the asteroid belt. Vesta is the second most massive object in that belt. This huge asteroid was discovered by Olbers in March 1807. Due to its apparent magnitude of 5.1 to 8.50, Vesta is the brightest asteroid in the sky. Therefore, the asteroid is occasionally seen with the naked eye from Earth. Object approached the Earth in 1996, and it was much studied then. It has an irregular shape, approximately the shape of a rounded ball. Scientists have studied this asteroid and confirmed many characteristics. Asteroid Vesta is approximately 525 kilometers large, and makes up about 9% of the mass of the asteroid’s belt.
Lava on an asteroid
Over a long period of time, Vesta lost a lot of her weight. This is due to the many collisions that occurred during that period. It still happens today. The temperature on this asteroid varies from a minimum of 85 K and a maximum of 270 K. Observations from Earth have determined that lava once flowed on the object . Therefore, the asteroid’s ground is furrowed. The Hubble Space Telescope mapped its surface and characteristics. Then, a large crater was discovered at the South Pole, which cut into the interior of the asteroid. In addition, there are other interesting features. Vesta is unique among asteroids in that it has dark and light spots on the surface. This is very similar to our Moon.
Like other planets, object has a crust of cooled lava that covers the core of nickel and iron. Therefore, Vesta is rather a protoplanet, not an asteroid. The region, which is filled with many asteroids, has also been visited by spacecraft. Vesta is the first of the four largest asteroids (Ceres, Vesta, Pallas and Hygiea) visited by the spaceship Dawn. The Dawn Mission toured object in 2011, and provided new insights into this rocky world. A large number of asteroids are orbiting West, and some have fallen to Earth. Then the exact orbit of this large asteroid was found out. The orbit of Vesta is located entirely within the orbit of Ceres.
