Black Eye Galaxy

Maybe you didn’t know this. With the help of a small telescope, in addition to the stars – you can also see galaxies in the sky. One such is the galaxy M64. It is also known as the Black Eye Galaxy. The spiral galaxy is 17 million light-years away. It is located in the constellation Coma Berenices. In conclusion, what we see in the telescope is an image of a galaxy from 17 million years ago. All this time the light traveled to us to finally see it. Long distances. The galaxy is composed like many other galaxies. The M64 consists of a flat rotating disk containing stars, dust and gas.

Protrusion in the middle

Galaxies in the middle have a bulge made up of numerous stars. M64, like other spiral galaxies, has spiral structures that extend from the center to the edges of the galaxy. This is the realm of creating new young OB stars. The stars are much brighter than the rest of the disc. The galaxy was discovered in 1779, and got its characteristic name because of the dark strip of dust that is in front of the core of the galaxy. An angle of 112 degrees and an inclination of 60 degrees – put the galaxy M64 in a great position for astronomical observations and photography. And don’t forget – 17 million years later.
